About The Space…
South West Art believe that art in all its forms can be healing and therapeutic; better enabling us to cope with the modern world and through creativity enjoy, engage and consider the world around us, temporarily blocking out the pressures of everyday life. Printmaking covers a wide range of expressive mark-making techniques which do not require years of skill and learning to make some fantastic images, but unfortunately it often requires a good amount of space and specialist equipment and is therefore not always possible to be learned or enjoyed at home or from a more generic venue.
Therefore, SWA have created a space in Sidmouth, accessible to all, where you can discover the world of printmaking, and more experienced printmakers can create and enjoy their art, taking inspiration from the beauty in the area and making use of 3 fabulous Gunning Presses, as well as a good range of quality equipment provided by the venue in collaboration with Ironbridge Fine Art.
Where Is The Studio?
Just a 2 minute walk from our specialist art materials store, we have created a fully equipped print studio in a quaint street in the centre of the very picturesque coastal town of Sidmouth, East Devon.
Another two minute level walk will take you to the seafront and the studio is a stone’s throw from many fabulous cafes & shops. The studio is a very accessible venue in a listed building with beautiful full-length windows looking out view over the parish church which, together with the high corniced ceilings create a light, airy and relaxing creative space.
Community & Classes
As well as running printmaking workshops from a wide range of disciplines and with a variety of tutors from both near and far, the studio will also provide open access for those wish to hire the space for their own printmaking practice (please see pricing info for more details).
Accessiblity
The studio is ground level, however there are two small steps into the doorway from the street, and a very shallow step into the second half of the studio itself. However, we are considering the need for ramps for both these areas and at the time of writing this we are looking into this – please contact us if this is a concern. We have considered accessibility strongly when setting up all facilities within the venue but we would of course be very keen to know any concerns or problems you have prior to or whilst using our studio.
Hiring The Space
Artists are able to hire time in the studio on a half day, day, weekend or weekly basis. Times vary and you will be contacted to discuss details after / during booking. Please contact studio for details. Professional artists wishing to use the space for residencies will also be welcome, and for those wishing to arrange themselves a creative holiday package a list of local accommodation options are available for you to consider.
Our Creative Community
South West Art has always been more than a shop, it’s a place where artists connect, learn and feel understood. Over the last 20 years, a real creative family has formed around us: beginners taking their first steps, professionals refining their craft and makers who simply love the process.
Workshops, Summer School, and now our fully equipped printmaking studio have helped turn that community into something special. People travel from across the South West and further because they know they’ll find honest advice, quality materials and people who genuinely care about their creative journey.
